Avast! Spoilers there be!
Seriously. Spoilers for “Solo: A Star Wars Story” and the Harry Potter universe ahead.
Do you not hate it when the charming rogue turns out to be an agent of pure, oppressive, violent evil? The latest example upon which I have stumbled is Rio Durant, the four-armed alien who pilots for Tobias Beckett in “Solo: A Star Wars Story.”
When we first meet him, he defends Han and Chewbacca when Beckett and his wife, Val, want to dispose of them both. He is good-natured, funny and seems like the kind of multi-limbed interstellar being with whom one would enjoy a beer.
We later discover that Beckett’s crew work for a violent criminal organization that supports the Empire. He is on the same team as Darth Sidious, Vader, Tarkin, Orson Krennic and the Stormtroopers. He is an oppressor. His jaunty, amiable personality does not change that.
But he is likable in person. So he’s got that going for ‘im.
In contrast, check out Severus Snape in the Harry Potter universe. He is gruff, impolite, superior, condescending, and all-around an unlikable son of a bitch. We think he is one of the bad guys. Ultimately, we learn, he is a hero. He is one of the good guys.
One can see how easy it can be to be fooled by initial impressions.
